Try a new shade for the new yearMake a New Year's resolution to try a new shade

Whether it's a bold new top, a vibrant hair hue or a rich shade of lipstick, for many of us colour can be a frightening concept.

And while it may be easy to stick to neutral ground with taupe, beige and black, this winter, it's time to be bold, to be daring and to add a splash of colour to your makeup routine!

Enchanting eye effects

Eyes make a statement this season in shades of gold, chocolate brown, regal purple, berry and mauve. To achieve this look, combine a trio of colours coordinated to be worn together - like Mary Kay mineral eye color in precious pink for the base of the eye, sweet plum in the crease and finished with a sweep of raisin along the outer corners.

To make the eyes pop, Debra Joseph, director of marketing, e-business and communications at Mary Kay Cosmetics Ltd., recommends finishing the eye with eyeliner. "Grey works best for a smoky eye effect, but this season you can put a fresh spin on the look with shades of gold, green or plum," she says. "Mary Kay eyeliner in navy, amethyst and steely are also great for creating sultry effects."

Swipe two layers of mascara - and you're ready to go! How easy was that?

Colourful cheeks. the key ingredient

A hint of colour on the cheeks can take your makeup look from everyday plain to bright and beautiful - instantly. This season, it's all about mauves and berries.

But how do you apply cheek colour without looking like a circus clown? Joseph suggests starting at the apples of the cheeks and then blending upwards to the temples in a circular motion.

Think berries, think red? Think again! Mary Kay's mineral cheek colours in bold berry, strawberry cream and cherry blossom allow you to achieve a winter fresh glow that hints at an afternoon spent outdoors.

Bold and beautiful lips

Both subtle and sassy, lips are a showstopper this season. Once again, berries and plums take centre stage - but keep in mind that winter is also the perfect time to go vintage Hollywood glam with fiery reds! Just remember that if you're going to experiment with red, keep the eyes and cheeks light and bright.

"The key to wearing red lipstick is to find the right shade to match your skin's complexion," advises Joseph. "Women with fair skin should wear sheer shades, while those with darker complexions can go bold."

If you're hesitant to go for all out red, take intense red shades down a notch by staining lips. Simply apply a creamy, moisturizing lipstick with a brush or your finger, then blot until you achieve a natural, matte look.

Playing with colour - try before you buy

Still not convinced you can go bold this winter? Mary Kay's online virtual makeover - available at marykay.ca - allows you to play "makeup artist" for the day to create a look that's all your own, without spending a cent.

So with a little courage and some experimenting, you'll see how easy it is to keep your look hot - even when the weather gets icy.
