Use these simple winter skin care tips to keep your skin glowing throughout the winter months. 1. Loss of skin moisture is related to structural skin changes that can be linked to aging. To ensure your skin maintains adequate moisture during the winter months regularly apply a rich cream or lotion several times throughout the day to seal in moisture and replenish the skin. Avoid hot showers and baths as they are drying to the skin. Take quick warm showers. Putting on a cream, ointment or lotion immediately after a bath or shower helps trap the water in the upper layers of the skin and decreases dryness and itching. 2. Exfoliate for optimum skin health. Exfoliation using scrubs, peels and rough washcloths helps to remove flaking skin and replenish skin cells to keep the skins surface smooth, but don’t overdo it. Be careful of products containing alpha-hydroxy acids. AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) exfoliate the top layer of the skin, which is good for dry skin, but they leave the new layer of skin unprotected to the bitter winds. 3. Snow and ice reflect winter sunlight doubling the damaging effect of the rays. Apply a sunscreen when outside and be extra careful of UV rays bouncing off the snow when skiing and participating in outdoor sports. Look for a sunscreen offering a high sun protection factor (SPF) for UVB protection. 4. Hands are particularly susceptible to harsh winter conditions and should be treated with extra care. Apply a rich hand cream several times during the day to prevent dried, scaly and itchy skin. If your skin should suffer from winter itchiness use a fragrance free cream and avoid the use of bacterial and alcohol based hand washes or sanitizers as these have the effect of further removing protective natural oils from the skin. 5. Lips can become dry and cracked during the winter months from the cold, wind and rain. Apply lip balm throughout the day to keep lips soft and supple. Never lick your lips to moisten them. Unfortunately, even though saliva soothes momentarily, it eventually dries out the lips, irritating them even more. This vicious cycle leads to lips that are painful, cracked and bleeding. 6. Wrap up warm whenever you venture outside. Put on a hat, wear a scarf that can be pulled up over your cheeks and gloves for your hands when the weather is particularly cold to provide protection from the wind and the elements. 7. Remember to drink water regularly throughout the day to Keep skin hydrated from the inside out and drink green tea for it's anti-inflammatory properties. Avoid too much alcohol, coffee and fizzy drinks containing caffeine that can dehydrate and rob the skin of fluids. 8. Include foods with essential fatty acids, such as salmon, walnuts and canola oil in your diet to promote a healthy skin.
