With the holiday season just around the corner, creating a warm environment for gatherings is essential for setting a festive mood. Since windows are a home's eyes to the world, selecting beautiful window fashions is the perfect way to frame the winter wonderland outside.

Finding window treatments to perfectly accessorize the home is as much an art as a science. Basic design principles such as space, line, form, colour and texture can be used to guide you in the selection process. The experts at Hunter Douglas have the following tips to offer to make your home merry for the holidays and all year round.

Space

To visually expand a window or room, choose soft, light or cool colours. Coordinate the window coverings with the wall colour because low contrasts keep the eye moving. Reverse the technique to make the window or room appear smaller by using dark colours and high contrast between the window and wall.

Line

Vertical lines add height to a room, creating formality and drawing the eye upwards. Vertical blinds, such as Luminette Privacy Sheers, which combine a sheer fabric face and adjustable fabric vanes, are a good option. Horizontally oriented window treatments, such as Country Woods wood blinds, are less formal and more relaxing. Curved lines on windows have a softening effect. Pirouette window shadings, a totally new concept in light control featuring soft adjustable fabric vanes that float gracefully in front of a fabric sheer, are ideal for this look.

Form

Window fashions may also be used to alter and improve existing window shapes. For example, a treatment can be installed outside the window opening and above the moulding to lengthen the look.

Colour

This is the most important element in a room for setting a mood. A good rule of thumb when combining colours is to allow the primary colour to be featured in up to 75 percent of the room, the secondary colour 15 to 20 percent and the third colour ten percent. The primary colour is usually in the floor and/or wall coverings. Window fashions can repeat colours and introduce secondary and accent colours.

Texture

Visual texture is an important consideration. Using several levels of complementary textures adds variety and interest. For a casual feeling, choose fabrics with a nubby feel. For a more formal look, use a smooth-texture. Hunter Douglas window fashions are available in hundreds of textures.
