The Success Principles

The Success Principles (TM): How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

Top 100 List

I personally like this method for keeping track of what I am currently working on or towards.

Have a list of the top 100 Things you want to be/do/have. Simply have an ongoing list numbered from 1-100. Try to keep it all on one page if you can. It makes it easier to see what you are working towards doing, being, having.

Include on your list

Things you want to do: e.g. Take Cruise to Alaska, Learn to play the Piano

Things I want to be: e.g. Be more patient, Smile more

Things I want to have: e.g. A large circle of friends, A luxurious home in tropical garden setting

Review, plan and take action upon things on your list. When items have been completed, no longer appeal to you, or you find you are a simply no good at them remove them from your list and add new ones as you go. You will have many of these lists through out the years.

"Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek." - Mario Andretti, Race Car Driver

Setting GoalsSetting personal goals gives a target to aim for and provides the necessary focus to channel your time and energy towards what is important in relation to where you are going and how you intend to get there. For some people keeping a flexible "Top 100 list" or "To do before I die" list works well for them. Others like a more formal approach that involves planning and breaking down goals into lifetime, yearly, monthly, weekly and even daily objectives that lead to the completion of their main goals. If you are one of the latter type then read on...

When was the last time your reviewed your current goal list?

What goals have your successfully completed?

What goals will you carry forward into your new plan?

You do have your goals written down don't you?

If not, then go do it NOW. Research has shown that writing your goals down increases your odds of achieving them by 80%. Get a notebook and write out your goals.

Make separate headings for each of the major life areas.

  • Health
  • Family
  • Financial
  • Intellectual
  • Social
  • Professional
  • Spiritual

In each of these areas ask yourself...

  • What do I want?
  • Why do I you want it?
  • And what am I willing to do to get it?

Take the time to ponder and reflect on your answers.

It has been found that the higher the goals you set, the higher you achieve. Have you set your goals high enough?

There are no hard and fast rules, or right or wrong way, when it comes to how you set goals. Some experts say...

  • Always have a date attached to your goal
  • or - no deadline, as a date only causes anxiety and doubt over achieving it
  • or - focus on 3-6 goals at a time and forget all others
  • or - have as many goals as you possibly can

Experiment and decide what method works best for you.

Have you set SMART goals?

A SMART goal is always...

S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Action Orientated
R - Relevant
T - Timely

The hardest part of any goal is starting

Decide on your most important goals and translate them into specific steps and activities required for you to reach them. Start with the end in mind and work backwards.

What do you need to do yearly, monthly, weekly?

What can you do in the next 24 hours to get started on your goal?

There is power in writing goals down. The most successful and wealthiest people in the world have written goals and are willing to pay the price through sustained effort until they are reached. To keep motivated put your goals on paper and place them where you will be reminded of what you are trying to achieve: on your bathroom mirror, in the car, your wallet or purse, beside your computer or any place where you will view them often.

Long term goals of 2, 3, 5 years or lifetime goals may require many steps to reach the target and should be re-evaluated on a regular basis to en sure you are still on course. At other times goals may change and may need a course adjustment to get back on track if this is a goal you still want to achieve.

If you have not started on turning dreams into reality then DO IT NOW for there is no time like the present to take action towards making those dreams a part of your everyday life.
