Warm colours Warm colours psychologically are associated with happiness and comfort and produce warm, inviting and cosy feelings. Like warm cosy fires in winter or enjoying the hot Mediterranean sunshine. Warm colours include: Red Orange Yellow magenta and yellow-green hues They have the ability to advance text and images to the foreground and tend to speed up our perception of time. Warm colours are considered harmonious colours. However, they lack in visual variety and are often dull and boring unless used in combination with other colours. Refer to the meaning of individual colours in the appropriate section. Cool Colours Cool colours make designs appear slick and professional but their coolness. Cool colours, especially blue, tends to recede into the distance making them more suitable for backgrounds. Cool colours include: Sea Green, Violet, Blue, light blue and cyan These colours are known to slow down the perception of time. Without variety the cool colour design can seem very dull and boring. Note: Pastel colours are considered to have a calming effect on the psychology. Refer to the meaning of individual colours in the appropriate chapter. Neutral Colours Some colours are referred to as being neutral. No colour is however really neutral. Black, white, Grey and Brown are all considered neutral colours White is the purest of all the colours and psychologically denotes purity and chastity. Black signifies dark forces in many Western cultures but wealth and abundance in the Eastern cultures. When black is tempered with white to make Grey it denotes prudence and humility.
