Spray a garland with white and silver glitter to give it a sugar-coated vintage look and hang it on your staircase rail or fireplace mantle.

Treasures for the Christmas Tree: 101 Festive Ornaments to Make & Enjoy

For Rooms That Rock hosts Andrew Pike and Cheryl Torrenueva on HGTV, the best way to celebrate the holidays is to add seasonal splash to tried and true holiday décor. The design savvy duo suggests incorporating unique twists that will get your family involved with fun, festive and creative activities. Let your imagination run wild while spreading the holiday cheer.

Create a Twig Christmas Tree

Instead of a spruce, pine, or Douglas fir - why not have a tree completely made out of small twigs and branches. Spray them any colour and decorate with glitter, costume jewellery, ribbons and feathers. And at the end of the season, they can be stored away for the next year, making them a very environmentally friendly alternative to a fresh tree.

Choose a Non-Traditional Colour to Decorate

Instead of decorating with the traditional reds and greens of Christmas, why not pick a colour not normally associated with the holidays? An abundance of chocolate glass bulbs will help to create an ultra modern feel, or even decorate with black and silver to achieve a tuxedo like look for your space. Let your imagination run wild.

Use Photo Gift Tags

Instead of just buying pre-made gift tags, why not surprise your loved ones by making your own using a digital camera and colour printer. Use pictures of the family and friends and personalize the tag for each present with a photo decorated with glitter and markers.

Utilize Non-Traditional Gift Wrap

Any flooring and carpet store will have oodles of large cardboard tubes that flooring is kept on and should be happy to get rid of them. Cut the tubes into the desired length to fit the gift and by tying the paper shut at both ends with some ribbon, you've created a festive oversized Christmas cracker.

Create a Festive Birch Pole Card Display

Birch poles are available in many lengths at nurseries and stores that supply winter greens and trees. Try assembling a group of birch poles and lean them against the wall. Lash them together with festive ribbons and you have created a visually interesting piece of wall art, as well as a focal point in the room to hang all of your holiday cards and special ornaments.

Christmas Morning Treasure Hunt

Instead of just placing all of the gifts under the tree, why not start the morning with a family game of treasure hunt? Leave clues under the tree, and involve the entire family in a game that will take them throughout the house to find each present.
